These are the most beautiful towns in Germany that I’ve visited. They have that fairytale-like vibe with cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses and shops hung with the most pretty and intricate store signs. You will fall in love with these small towns in Germany!
Rüdesheim Am Rhein
Rüdesheim Am Rhein on the Rhine Gorge is one of the best small towns in Germany. With a textbook medieval street seemingly lifted straight out of a fairy tale story and an equally compact medieval Old Town, its beauty is captivating.

Rüdesheim is one of the villages along the Rhine Valley. It’s a winemaking town that boasts of its excellent Riesling wines. Resident Brömserburg Castle showcases the town’s history, particularly presenting a chronicle of the town’s foray and progress through the years in producing the best wine.
Drosselgasse, Rüdesheim’s iconic medieval street, is well-preserved and dates back to the 15th century. Lined with restaurants, cafés, bars, and quaint little shops, this little street (more like an alley, really) is as authentic and Germanic as they come.
Tourists flock to this backstreet like moths to a flame and for good reason. It takes you back in time and lets you experience what it must have been like in medieval times of old.
The rest of Rüdeshiem is just as lovely. Little charming small streets snake across town and picturesque half-timbered houses dot its landscape.
Taverns enveloped with character as well as quaint little stores hung with the fanciest and most intricate signages can be found everywhere.
It also has spacious and inviting squares where one can relax.
Lastly, it offers a gorgeous view of the Rhine Valley from its vineyards on the hill.

Cochem
The small town of Cochem along the Mosel River is another of those picturesque small villages in Germany.
A quintessential fairy tale castle–complete with towers and turrets topped with flags and banners–dramatically rises on a hill and watches over the village.
Its medieval Altstadt (Old Town) is peppered with half-timbered buildings now converted into restaurants, cafés, and shops on the ground floor, and its medieval square is bracketed on one side with an interesting-looking antique Town Hall.
Bendy streets snake to little nooks and crannies and up the vineyards on the hill and to the castle.
A crowd favorite, Cochem also boasts of a lovely promenade along the river that rivals that of the towns along the Rhine. A walk along this path is romantic and just one of the wonderful things Cochem offers when you visit.

Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber
The walled village of Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber in the Franconia region of Bavaria is Germany’s poster town of the Middle Ages.
Located along, and one of the stops in, the country’s fabled Romantic Road, this fanciful town presents that aura of being suspended in time. Its surrounding walls have suffered little damage even during the wars and its cobbled streets look as archaic as ever that it has been dubbed as the best-preserved medieval town in Europe.
Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber in the literal sense means “red castle on the Tauber”. It is very picturesque with half-timbered buildings all around, mighty turreted town gates heralding one’s entry, and large cobbled squares dotted with fountains and flowers.
Rothenburg offers a lot of sights to see and things to do. A night watchman, complete with costume and paraphernalia, makes a nightly tour aided by a lantern, an activity which you can join in on. A walk on top of Rothenburg’s mighty walls is a great experience, but even just going around town on foot is already a delight in itself.
Don’t miss the local dishes served in many of the restaurants here as they are some of the best I’ve tasted in Germany. That isn’t a surprise really as Franconia is known for its tasty fare.

I know some of the above places – and still have to visit Cochem. Luckily I now live in Germany, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get a weekend trip in during the spring/summer.
