Picturesque Bibury is one of the villages in the Cotswolds in England. It is beautiful, charming, and a bucket list destination when in the country. Famous Arts and Crafts designer William Morris agreed when he claimed it to be “the most beautiful village in England”.
About
Bibury is tiny with a population of less than 1,000. It is situated picturesquely along River Coln. Cute old cottages dot its landscape and waterways that crisscross across its expanse complete the idyllic scene.
Getting to Bibury
Bibury England is an hour and a half journey by car from London.
Another way to get there is to take the weekday buses from Cirencester, Cotswolds’ capital, which just takes a few minutes. There are several buses from the latter town plying the route on weekdays.
Bibury is also one of the more popular towns included in the Cotswolds tours being offered by tour companies, so it is easy to access when availing of these tours.
Exploring Bibury England
Since this is a relatively small town, exploring it on foot is the way to go. A couple of hours or less is enough to see everything, but you can linger in Arlington Row admiring the houses or take an afternoon tea in one of the tea shops in town.
Sights to See
These are the notable sights to see when in Bibury:
- Arlington Row, perhaps one of the most photographed sights in England, is beautiful as it is iconic. As its name suggests, it is a row of ancient weavers’ cottages made of warm yellow stone sporting sloping angle roofs and wonky windows that date back to the 17th century. It was originally a wool store when it was constructed in 1380. It has been the setting of famous films like Bridget Jones’s Diary and Stardust.
- The Church of St. Mary’s is a Saxon church, where you can view replicas of Saxon remains. Saxon and Norman carvings are a delight to see, too.
- Chedworth Roman Villa. This villa set in a forested valley and overlooking River Coln near Chedworth, Gloucestershire used to be one of the largest and most elaborate Roman villas in England back in the day. At present, what’s left is a mile-long of walls, more than 30 rooms, and a couple of baths. The colorful mosaics in the property are worth looking into. A museum and a café also grace the grounds.
- The Bibury Trout Farm, where you can catch your trout and enjoy a meal afterward.
