Do you know that the Palace of Versailles started as a humble hunting lodge in 1624 by Louis XIII? Today, it’s no longer your ordinary hunting lodge, but a massive and opulent mansion of sorts. And that is even putting it lightly. So be prepared for the grandeur that is uniquely the Palace of Versailles.
Day Trip from Paris
When it comes to day trips, Paris offers a treasure trove of gorgeous destinations. The best of them is the city of Versailles, home to the opulent palace bearing the same name, which was once the center of political power during the reign of King Louis XIV in the 17th century.
Why Visit Versailles
Versailles makes an absolutely impressive day trip from Paris for many reasons.
- One, it sits just on the outskirts of Paris, around 20 kilometers away, and many trains traverse the route every day.
- Second, the palace has many attractions to offer. Aside from the enormous and lavishly decorated mansion itself (or Château de Versailles, as it is also known) and the other structures and magnificent gardens on the estate, there are many historic buildings scattered across town that are worth seeing.
- Third, being rich in history, Versailles offers an interesting glimpse into what was once the royal splendor of France.

The Palace of Versailles
We’re taking a closer look at the Palace of Versailles, or simply, Versailles.
Know that this royal place is as much a tourist magnet as it is a splendid palace of monumental proportions and appointments. Tourists, therefore, flock to the sight like bees to a hive. When you’ve not done your due diligence beforehand, get prepared to get squished in the long lines and crowds, or worse yet, be unable to enter the château.

Things You Need to Know
Online Tickets
To avoid getting into a long queue or joining a madding crowd of tourists, get your tickets before going to Versailles. Tickets are available online at www.chateauversailles.fr, which allows you to zip through a special express line upon arrival.
Early Bird
The grounds at Versailles open at 9 a.m. and it pays to be early because Versailles is always packed with tourists, especially in the summer. I know many who weren’t able to enter the palace because of the large crowd.
Late is Great
Crowds start to thin around half past three in the afternoon, at which time fares also get a reduced rate. So if you can’t make it early, going late is a good option. The grounds are open until sunset, and on some evenings, there are evening concerts you can enjoy.
Food
If you want to cover everything Versailles has to offer in a day, bringing food along helps you do so. While there’s a restaurant, a café, and a snack bar within the château itself, you can, however, take a nice, leisurely picnic along the lake at the château.
Bike or Golf Carts
You can rent bikes or golf carts for faster sightseeing in Versailles.
Guided Tour
While you can explore the Hall of Mirrors, the Royal Apartments, the Royal Chapel, and other areas on your own, joining a guided tour gives you a better understanding of the château and its history.
Audio Tour
If you’d rather skip the guided tour, an audio tour is the next best thing to give you more information about the palace.
Hours and Admissions
For opening times and other admission details, please visit www.chateauversailles.fr. Take note, however, that Versailles is closed on Mondays, admissions to the gardens and park are free, and admissions for all areas are free for those under 18.
